"I guess it will never be the same ," she mused.
"There were plenty of illusions back then. They were mostly happy illusions."
"Do people think people are getting worse, Scott? Or we're just getting more cynical?"
I mulled it over.
"But there are good people out there," I said, patting her shoulders. "There always will be."
"There'll always be liars, too."
"Yeah, but there's nothing new. There have always been liars and there have always been lies. It's human nature. That'll never change."
I kept my pensive gaze out the window. "But sometimes ... I don't know. Sometime I wonder where did we get so darn good at it, you know? When did we all get so darn slick?"
It was quite stumper indeed.
Madison curled in my gasp, yawning, closing her eyes. "So what do you think's going to happen with them?"
"With who?"
"Harmony. Everyone."
I didn't have the slightest clue.
For sure I know is that somebody, at some point, will try to tell the story behind the story. Long after the stage was cleared and a new crisis and villain to take on the stage.
Who knows? Even somebody were able to embellished the details.
Maybe... Harmony will get everything she wants out of life, every success she deserved. Or maybe she wouldn't. Maybe Maxina would't try very hard to ruin my future. Or maybe I'll find a new one. Maybe I'll track down Ira and turn his Move My Cheese thing into a profitable business venture for both of us. Maybe I wouldn't.
"That's nor fair."
With considerable effort, I slipped down onto the floor from the couch.
"It's alright," I told her. "I'll manage."
"But what are you gonna do now?"
"I'm just going to finish this nice cup of tea you made. Im going to lie back on the couch. And then I figure I'll either get better or die. I haven't decided which."
